1st place in Wildcard Portrait
The WPJA contest judges presented Gerhard Nel, a Zuid Holland, Netherlands wedding photographer, with this Master Piece Award as recognition for top wedding photojournalism in the industry.
The leading documentary wedding photographers in the world enter their best photos to the Wedding Photojournalist Association's photography competitions. They want their wedding reportage photographs to be evaluated and selected by some of the most notable and respected working picture editors and photojournalists in the news industry (these are not wedding photographers or other WPJA members judging their work). Winning these competitions is a true accomplishment for a wedding photographer.

- This is a clever idea for a portrait, one that invites intrigue. It takes the viewer on this strange visual experience, a vicarious wonderment of the what, why, when, where and how of thought. Gathering the chickens with seed is one thing but to exact the right pose of bride and groom from an angle that presents a visual surprise is quite another. Otherwise its attributes are plan to see - the colors at center in contrast to the muted yellows and browns that surround, or the circle of birds and the couple themselves forming a frame within a frame, creates a spectacle of visual subduction.
